Organic visibility

How often a brand comes up in AI answers to queries that did not name it. Branded and comparison queries cannot inflate it. n/a means there was nothing to measure, usually because every query named the brand.

Organic visibility tells you whether AI brings up a brand when the query did not name it.

How Fond computes it

For each brand, Fond splits your tracked queries into two groups. A query that names the brand, such as "Allbirds vs Rothy's", is solicited for that brand, and a mention there is non-organic. Every other query, such as "best sustainable sneakers", is blind for that brand. Organic visibility is the visibility of the brand over these blind queries.

A query names a brand when it names the brand or one of its sub-brands. For your own brand, that includes the aliases in your brand settings and the variants that Fond has matched to you.

What Fond counts depends on where you read it:

  • The Organic line on the Visibility page, and the figure beside Total, count answers. They divide the answers to blind queries that mention the brand by all the successful answers to blind queries.
  • The organic rate in share of voice, by tier and cluster, counts queries. A blind query counts once if any answer to it mentioned the brand.
  • On the Competitors page, with the Organic lens on, Mentions counts only the mentions of a brand on its own blind queries. Rate is the share of its blind queries where it appeared.

Take a run of 40 queries, where 10 name Allbirds. The blind sample for Allbirds is the other 30, and 4 assistants give 120 answers to them. If AI mentions Allbirds on 9 of the 30 queries, its rate by query is 30%. If only 12 of the 120 answers mention it, its rate by answer is 10%. Neither figure depends on the 10 queries that named Allbirds.

Reading n/a

n/a means that there was nothing to measure, which is not the same as 0%. There are two causes:

  • Every query named the brand. To measure organic visibility, add queries that describe the need without the brand name.
  • Every answer to a blind query failed, so the Visibility page has no answers to count. The figure fills in on the next run that succeeds.
  • AI visibility counts every query, including the queries that named you.
  • Organic citations apply the same idea to sources, more narrowly. They keep the query and drop only the links to the named brand's own site.
